Dr. Wally Smith, M.D.
Virginia Commonwealth University
Dr. Wally Smith is a nationally recognized physician, researcher, and leader in sickle cell disease care at Virginia Commonwealth University. As a member of the Advisory Council, he provides clinical expertise, research insight, and strategic guidance that supports the Association’s mission to improve patient outcomes, expand education, and strengthen access to quality healthcare throughout Virginia.

Florence Neal Cooper Smith is a pioneering advocate whose decades of leadership transformed sickle cell awareness, education, and public health initiatives throughout Virginia. Affectionately known as the “Mother of Sickle Cell in the Commonwealth of Virginia,” her legacy continues to inspire generations of healthcare professionals, advocates, and community leaders dedicated to improving the lives of individuals and families affected by sickle cell disease.
